Alongside his brother Bernard, Isaac founded Bernheim Brothers in Paducah, KY in 1872, eventually introducing the iconic I.W. Harper brand in 1879. With a golden triumph at the New Orleans Exposition in 1885, the brand swiftly rose to prominence. Despite setbacks, including a distillery fire and the challenges of Prohibition, the Bernheim legacy endured. Surviving on a medicinal spirits license, the brand changed hands over the years until finding a home with Schenley in 1937, marking the beginning of an international expansion that reached 110 countries. Harper withdrew from the U.S. market, opting for an exclusive focus on international distribution, attributed in part to efforts to curb the “grey market” trade.
