The 2020 Mazoyres-Chambertin Grand Cru has a vivacious nose – according to Romain Taupenot it was much more closed the previous week. Hints of brown spice infused the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, fine acidity, taut and fresh with veins of orange zest and white pepper on the finish. Great length, but this is quite strict and therefore cellaring is recommended.

13.7% alcohol. The soil here is mostly alluvial, though full of large stones from the hard Premeaux and Comblanchien limestone, unlike their Charmes which is on crinoidal limestone with less topsoil. Nearly as deep a colour as its neighbour, with a little more depth of fruit to the nose. Bright succulent fruit, very lifted at the finish, I really thought there were whole bunches. Beautiful finish. Bravo.
