The Isle of Harris Distillery, known locally as The Social Distillery, opened its doors in 2015 in the heart of Tarbert, on the remote and rugged Isle of Harris in Scotlands Outer Hebrides. More than a whisky producer, it was founded with a clear social purpose to create sustainable employment and support community life on the island.Architecturally striking yet deeply rooted in tradition, the distillery has quickly become a landmark of modern Scotch whisky making. Its first permanent whisky, The Hearach, is named after the people of Harris (Hearachs), embodying the character of the island itself: elemental, resilient, and authentic.The distillery uses locally drawn soft water and marries traditional copper pot stills with modern practices, producing a lightly peated style of single malt with a distinctive maritime influence.
