2020 Cordero di Montezemolo Barolo “Gattera”, Piedmont, Italy

ABOUT THIS WINE

Made from the harvesting of old vines. The most profound expression of the family’s most historic vineyard. The Gattera vineyard (official MGA) measures over 11 hectares. It accounts for the majority of the Barolo Monfalletto. Within this hillside area, however, there can be found a variety of different planting periods, exposures, altitudes, land morphologies, varietal clones and microclimates. This interweaving of elements led the vitners to divide the hillside into eight sections that are harvested and vinified separately to bring out the best in each one. In two sections there are some very old vines (over 50 years old) which, due to the above-mentioned characteristics, the winemakers believe capable of giving great depth, concentration and character to the wine made from them. Consequently, a single fermentation tank of wine is made from the grapes harvested exclusively from these vines. Upon completion of the production process, the wine is bottled under the official name of the geographical mention: Gattera.
A Barolo with darker nuances, with a higher concentration of pulp and tannin than Monfalletto but also with a feminine delicacy in its aromas, which make it easy to drink when young without losing any of its bite as it ages.

ABOUT THIS PRODUCER

Cordero di Montezemolo is one of the most historic and respected family-owned wineries in Piedmont, located in the heart of the Barolo DOCG zone in La Morra. The estates documented winemaking history dates back to 1340, making it one of the oldest continuously run properties in the Langhe. Today, the winery remains in the hands of the Cordero di Montezemolo family, now spanning nineteen generations, and is widely regarded as a benchmark producer of classic, age-worthy Barolo.

The estate comprises more than 50 hectares of vineyards spread across some of the Langhes most prestigious areas, including La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Alba, Guarene, and Cherasco. Unlike many producers in the region who work with small, fragmented parcels, Cordero di Montezemolo benefits from large, contiguous vineyard holdings, allowing for consistent vineyard management and a clear expression of site. All vineyards are farmed organically, reflecting a long-standing commitment to sustainability, biodiversity, and respect for the land. A towering Lebanese cedar planted in 1856 stands on the property and has become a symbol of the estates heritage.
