ABOUT THE WINE

La Penitencia is sourced from a steep, northeast-facing parcel of 80100-year-old vines in the Valtuille de Abajo zone of Bierzo, planted on a complex mix of slate, clay, and sand. Though its dominated by Menca, the vineyard is co-planted with a field blend of indigenous varieties like Alicante Bouschet, Bastardo (Trousseau), and Garnacha Tintorera, all harvested and vinified together. The fruit is hand-picked, then fermented whole-cluster with native yeasts in open wooden vats. Aging occurs in used French oak for 1214 months, with minimal sulfur additions.

On the nose, the wine exudes purityraspberry, hibiscus, crushed rock, and subtle smoke. The palate is remarkably focused and fresh, with a mineral tension that reflects the vineyards cool exposure and old vines. This is a cerebral red, ideally paired with roasted quail, wild mushroom dishes, or aged Manchego.

ABOUT THE PRODUCER

Ral Prez stands at the vanguard of Spains wine revolution, crafting soulful, site-specific wines that defy formula and embrace nature. A native of Bierzo, he began at his familys Castro Ventosa estate before launching his own projects, always rooted in deep local knowledge and a hands-off, instinctual approach. His wines are defined by low intervention, organic viticulture, native fermentations, and a reverence for old vines, many of which are field blends that express the full biodiversity of their sites.

La Penitencia is emblematic of Prezs philosophy: honoring tradition while pushing boundaries, coaxing elegance, nuance, and emotional depth from rugged hillside vineyards.
