The McCarty III pickups were developed through close collaboration between Paul Reed Smith and the PRS New Product Engineering team. Drawing on extensive hands-on testing of sought-after vintage pickups and leveraging state-of-the-art analysis tools, these pickups reflect years of innovation and tonal refinement. Designed to echo classic humbucker voicings, McCarty III pickups produce a rich, vocal midrange with clarity and warmth. A zinc two-piece bridge with brass saddles and steel posts, a bone nut, and PRS Phase III tuners with brass shafts complete the hardware package, staying true to the legacy of the McCarty line.

In the late ’80s, Paul Reed Smith sought guidance from Ted McCarty to refine his approach to guitar craftsmanship and design. Ted not only mentored Paul but became a beloved part of the PRS community. By 1994, the first McCarty model debuted, representing a fusion of Teds industry insights and Pauls passion for guitar making.
