A plant pot formed from the clay of Kusatsu on the shores of Lake Biwa, inspired by ancient pottery and modeled after the shape of a torch. A modern reinterpretation of Kusatsu ware, a ceramic tradition from 1,400 years ago, the aged-looking patina evokes the passage of time.
Left unglazed, this pot is decorated with a local Lake Biwa mud known as Seta Silt, whose high iron content creates the black hue. Additional mud sprayed on with a mister adds depth to the color. Intentionally peeled to reveal an underlayer of white mud, the result is a color contrast that feels rustic and striking. No two are alike, creating expressive experiences unique to each user.
This plant pot was designed to provide an optimal environment for plants. Its unglazed finish, slanted inner walls, and wide hole in the base help increase breathability and improve water drainage. This reduces the chance of root rot and other problems that arise from standing water. The slender but tall shape of the Torch series is designed to accommodate plants with vertical root systems.
Plant and vessel nurture each other, the pots character deepening with use as the plant grows. Rooted in the land and its history, this plant pot is more than a vessel; it is a poem connecting past and present that comes alive in your home.
