One Chain Vineyards, like Thistledown is overseen by Peter Leske, Giles Cooke MW and Fergal Tynan MW. Comprising two ranges, Cricket Series and Character Series, One Chain works with growers to source fruit from some of the most established regions of South Australia. Our Character Series has a range of beautifully produced and packaged wines, benefitting from the same ultra premium quality fruit sourced for Thistledown. Each wine has great varietal definition coupled with our signature vibrancy and freshness. These are wines that are immediately pleasing, yet authentic expression of the variety and place. Our Cricket Series wines are inspired by a love for the Australian national sport. Indeed, the name One Chain is the imperial measurement for 22 yards, or the length of a cricket pitch. However, you really don’t need to be a connoisseur of the game to be bowled over by the restrained, elegant style of the Chardonnay and the bright red fruit and subtle oak of the Shiraz Cabernet.

Vineyards

Langhorne Creek is often overlooked in favour of the more glitzy McLaren Vale and Barossa but it is a region with over 160 years history and some remarkable old vineyards. Situated on a flood plain close to the impressive Lake Alexandrina, our dry grown old Grenache vines produce tight bunches of well balanced, succulent fruit. Shiraz on a higher trellis system helps fruit health and balance.

Vinification

45% Grenache, 35% Shiraz, 20% Mataro (Mourvedre/Monastrell).

Vinification, as one might expect with good fruit, is very simple. The Grenache was hand picked in early morning before arrival at the winery where it underwent a very gentle crush and then an open ferment with twice daily hand plunging. Extended time on skins post ferment was followed by pressing and then maturation in French oak. Additions of perfectly balanced Langhorne Shiraz and just a little Mataro (Mourvedre) were made and the final blend achieved in July with the focus on bright, exuberant yet crunchy fruit.

Tasting Notes

The Unforgettable is a generous blend of 3 varieties, all of whom are long-term friends that know the benefits of teamwork. Working in cahoots, they produce a wine with succulent red berry fruit with hints of spice and chocolate. A clever, friendly wine that is indeed truly Unforgettable.
